Giveaway Week – NanoPi NEO NAS Kit with NEO 2 Board

Time has come to organize another giveaway week. I used to mainly give away TV boxes, but due to recent regulations that will not be possible anymore, and instead this giveaway week will include Linux and IoT development boards, and other accessories. I’ll start with NanoPi NEO NAS Kit v1.2.

NanoPi NEO NAS Kit v1.2 is a low cost kit NanoPi NEO or NEO 2 board that takes a 2.5″ hard drive. I’ve tested it with NanoPi NEO 2 board and OpenMediaVault, and found to perform optimally for this type of device (USB 2.0 to SATA), with SAMBA reads & writes achieving 40 MB/s.

Read and Write Speeds in MB/s

The hardware given away includes the NAS Kit v1.2 and a NanoPi NEO 2 board. You’ll just need to add a micro SD card with the OMV image, a hard drive, and a 12V/2A (or greater) power supply.

To enter the draw simply leave a comment below. Other rules are as follows:

  • Only one entry per contest. I will filter out entries with the same IP and/or email address.
  • Contests are open for 48 hours starting at 10am (Bangkok time) every day. Comments will be closed after 48 hours.
  • Winners will be selected with random.org, and announced in the comments section of each giveaway.
  • I’ll contact the winner by email, and I’ll expect an answer within 24 hours, or I’ll pick another winner.
  • Shipping
    • $14 for registered airmail small packet for oversea shipping payable via Paypal within 48 hours once the contest (for a given product) is complete.
    • If Paypal is not available in your country, you can still play, and I’ll cover the cost of sending the parcel by Sea and Land (SAL) without registration if you win.
  • I’ll post all 7 prizes at the same time, around the 8th of November
  • I’ll make sure we have 7 different winners, so if you have already won a device during this giveaway week, I’ll draw another person.

Good luck!

If you don’t end up winning, but are still interested in the solution, you can purchase the kit with NanoPi NEO 2 for $28.98 plus shipping on FriendlyARM website.

  1. love your blog and content. i especially love the heads up on reasonably priced esp8266 and esp32 developments boards.. jumped on a couple deals in the past and lucked out! the Geekcreit ESP32 Development Board from early sept was an excellent deal.. should have ordered more than two boards since the price has doubled since then!! anyway thanks for all your great work!!!

  2. ” but due to recent regulations that will not be possible anymore”

    –> what “recent regulations” ??

(in case i win, you can give it to another reader – for instance tkaiser will put it to better use)

  3. Awesome website, I admire the work and it is now the core of all my projects. Love from Mexico

  4. cnx-software is weekly, if not daily, reading. Many thanks for the great reporting.

  5. Seems to be a good moment to give you some feedback 🙂

Thank you for doing this, I have not looked back once since I added this site to my RSS reader. I concur with the above commenter that the news about cheap esp32 or similar boards are my favourite.

As for things to improve, or at least something I prefer to see more about is reviews or tests. The one thing I always wonder about for these cheap boards is documentation / support.

    Keep up the good work!

  6. Ohoh I’m really interested in this kit, my last DIY Nas machine is currently at my parents home because I didn’t want to take away from them the convenience of it, especially because of DLNA

  7. Thanks, this is quite a nice device; if it were not for the heavy shipping costs I would already have purchased one (shipping to NL is usd 20 with china post, usd 19 with DHL)

  8. I’ll take this oppportunity to thank you for all the valuable, unique and reliable content here! Really hard to find all three in one place these days. I have to switch to Tor proxy every day just to read this website. Don’t know why it is blocked in Kazakhstan, maybe it was cohosted with some nasty content, maybe just an error.

  9. Still the old banana pi is faster as it has a native sata interface and a gigabit Ethernet. I have setup one as a NAS AND I get ~50MB/sec and its average uptime is ~300 days the last 4+5 years.

  10. I started reading this site some time ago. Now I see that it’s not only great content but nice giveaway too. Count me in 🙂

  11. This kit has been on my list of wanna-haves ever since the review was posted on this site:-) Count me in and let’s hope i win. Another great giveaway!

  12. FriendlyElec does a great job with their boards and documentation, so this giveaway beats any tv box for me already. I’ve been reading your articles for almost a year, didn’t know that you’d do giveaways.

I have two or the first gen NanoPi Neo, but the GbE here with a decent SATA port looks awesome.

  13. Found your website and Armbian a few months ago. Very helpful for learning SBC and IoT!
Wouldn’t mind to try a few things with this NAS kit.

  14. Your blog itself is great, i’m reading it everyday. Btw. Comments here are also always interesting.
And this giveaway is worth to try. 🙂

  15. I got such a Neo2 NAS, but the front right USB port will only work with the FriendlyARM Rom and not with Armbian.
But the rest works fine with Armbian 🙂

  16. Been checking your website for years 1st thing in the morning. It’s great Thanks

  17. I already wanted to buy one, but shipping cost was to expensive. Maybe I have better luck now, or it just wasn’t meant to be.

  18. Well, I’ve been wanting to play with some of these classes of devices. I’m in

  19. Pretty sure I have a linux board addiction… I’ve been wanting to check out one of these for a while. Thanks!

  20. THX for all the work keeping up with the deluge of boards (wry smile).
Wish I couhd trade useless rpi3 vid/cam ports for sata2/3 ports.
Oh so close to dream micro boards. But RPI3 with Gentoo linux
is the best so far. Have an ASUS tinker board but the main thrust
for armbian seems the video not the gpio ports. Backwards from
    what I hoped lol.

On the Armbian forum there are two threads about a non-functioning USB port … So … same, same?

  22. Your newsletter is one of the few that I always look forward to. Thanks for the great content.

  23. I’m in!! Keep the good work, I visit your page on a daily basis and I find it great.

  24. So, cnx, I don’t have a paypal. If (that’s a really big if there) I win, can I pay you via other means? Like for example doku or western union?
