Zsun Wifi Card Reader Adds up to 64GB to Your Smartphone

I’ve previously covered Zsun SD11x USB flash drives with 8 to 128 GB internal flash, a battery, and Wi-Fi connectivity in order to easily add storage to devices without micro SD slots. The company has now launched a new Wi-Fi card reader to do the same, but with your own micro SD card instead allowing up to 64GB extra storage, and easy replacement.

Zsun_Wi-FI_Card_ReaderZsun card reader specifications:

  • SoC – Qualcomm Atheros AR9331 WiSoC
  • System Memory – 256 Mbit RAM (32 MB)
  • Storage – Internal flash for firmware (capacity TBD), micro SD slot up to 64GB
  • Connectivity – 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi @ 150 Mbps
  • USB – 1x USB 2.0 port for power and use as standard USB card reader
  • Dimensions – 33 x 30 x 13 mm

There’s no battery, so you’d have to connect the dongle to a power bank, PC, car charger etc.. to power it. If you connect it to a PC it will also be shown as an external USB drive. The company claims up to 8 people can watch movies simultaneously over Wi-Fi using their Android, iOS, or Windows app, but then it must be some low resolution 3gp video… I could not find a link for these apps, but it could the same Apple Extender (Android) and Phone Flash Disk (iOS) apps as for SD111.

SD111 Wi-Fi USB flash drive is hackable, as it’s been possible to access the Linux command line with the serial console after some soldering, and later on the root password (usable with telnet) was found to be zsun1188, so the same password might also work on this device.

Zsun Wi-Fi card reader sells for 79 CNY ($12.60) in China, and $14.99 on Aliexpress. The company also sells it for $39.99 on Amazon US (Model: Zsun-C1001R) with a 64GB card inside according to the page title. Further details can be found on Zsun W-Fi card reader page (Chinese).

Does there exist something similar for external usb-drives? Or well it be cheaper to buy a wr703n and piratebox it?

I don’t thhink we can buy these pogoplugs in europe. Otherwise it would be a perfect starting point.
The RAVpower looks good also but a little expensive, then a wr703n should be better.
I found also this, that should do the trick:

Would it be possible to connect this wirelessly to an android phone and use the zsun disk as the storage for torrents?
The phone would be used to control and manage the downloads

I received Zsun -WiFi card reader today. I confirm that it can be used with the zsun software on the app store/google play store. It is easy to set up. I am very happy.

Just received mine. It is presented as an AP without any encryption with the ESSID “zsun-sd7F0087FE”. When I try to DHCP on it, it does nothing, and on my android phone it even says “wrong password”, while there is no encryption. I suspect it has a fixed IP. Will try to sniff what the Android app is sending to it. Otherwise I have not found any way to open it yet without damaging it. On the USB side, it is presented via a USB hub chip from Genesys: $ lsusb Bus 002 Device 005: ID 05e3:0723 Genesys Logic, Inc. GL827L… Read more »

@Alex
You got the opportunity to pass your multimeter on the 4 pins on the edge? Is it a serial port?

Otherwise, I have not found a way to cleanly open mine, do you have some tricks, or should I forget about a clean opening?

@zoobab
Actually, I think I found an exploit in the fimware: http://www.zoobab.com/zsun-sd11x-wifi-card-reader
Just type reboot as ESSID name in the web interface, and the device reboots! I will see what I can do to get a shell, but this remembers me the first wrt54g exploit.

This is on flash sale at Banggood currently, at US$10.99, for another 2 more days:

Bought one yesterday, now have to wait a couple of weeks for it to arrive.

@Alex
Just connect your multimeter on Voltage measurement (0-20V should be enough), and the connect the black probe on a ground somewhere on the board (typically I would take one of the USB pins), and check if you have 3.3v on one of the pins you want to test. If you have 2 pins at 3.3v, it is probably TX and RX.

BTW your owncloud links do not work from here. Have you tried the exploit in the web interface? I could get ping working, but not telnetd nor netcat, still trying to think how to get in there.

The root/pwd is the same as the other zsun device.

Hi guys,
How can I switch between USB and WiFi mode in windows? Is there any application for windows OS? just like what is available for android or iOS. Is there any command to use in an explorer? It is necessary for me to be able to switch between modes in windows OS.

Zoobab my device is not detecting the sd card and as a result it does not mount it… Can I force by setting the GPIO pin ? How ?

Have you been able to get Openwrt on it ?

So I got one of these, and it works. I can connect to it with my phone and see the files on it, using the ZSun Android app. But what I’d like to do is to mount this to look like an SD card to Android. In particular, I want to put an SDcard full of music onto the ZSun, and then have a music player on my phone play those music files as if they were on the phone itself. Is that possible? How do I set that up?
