We’ve already seen RK3288 based Android TV boxes and sticks started to be advertised on Alibaba, and today Ugoos contacted me and shared some pictures and specs of their PCBA for Ugoos UT3 Android 4.4 TV box based on Rockchip RK3288 quad core Cortex A17 + Mali-T764 GPU SoC.
Here are the specs of the board and product:

- H.264, H.265 Data Rate – Up to 60Mbps
- Audio Codecs/Formats – MP1, MP2, MP3, WMA, WAV, OGG, OGA, APE, FLAC, AAC, M4A, 3GPP
- USB – 3x USB Host port, 1x micro USB OTG
- Power Supply – 5V/2A
- Temperature Range – Operating: -10~40, Storage: -20~50
- Humidity – 5%-90%, No condensation
- Certification – CCC,CE,EMC,FCC,Wi-Fi
There’s also a connector on the top right that looks like a SATA connector for 2.5″ hard drives, but it’s not listed in the specs. If it’s the case they probably use a USB to SATA chip, as RK3288 specs do not mention sata. The Wi-Fi module reads like AP6335. RK3288 is the small chip surrounded by a “green square”.
The company said the first samples are ready, and they are starting to check the software, so it may still take a while before products become available.

Good info!
Thanks for the info but this one doesn’t really sound right:
“The company said the first samples is ready, and they are starting to check software”
The first sample ARE ready ? and they are starting to check ( test ) THE software ?
@Marius
lol , I made a mistake too, it’s samples are ready of course
I just get the pcba board which base on rk3288 from tronsmart, i want to say,it’s really too early to release such news. it really have a long way when this device can really hit the market. at least in two month later.
the rk3288 use the mali t760, it should be much better than S802’s MALI 450, however, in antutu score, it just 22000, and rockchip won’t release the SDK till the end of this month. so there is no company who can built the software right now. they just can make the board, and then ship back to rockchip for the software. lol.
I will write some information about the rk3288 in our blog soon, but trust me,it’s too early to talk rockchip rk3288, guys.
Eric
I don’t think Ugoos has “ready samples” yet. Rockchip is debugging all the new boards from yesterday…
HDMI input?
Did i read right? This device will have HDMI input? What we will can do with that? Any Ideas guys?
Thanks a lot.
just 22000 in antutu, very disappointing, the ROM must be bugy for sure
the M802 much less powerful in CPU & GPU departements scores above 30000 in antutu
I think that the RK3288 must be a least on part with the snapdragon 800, and +/- the allwinner A80 that scores above 40000
HDMI IN does that means it can be use like a DVR? That would explain why there seems to be a SATA connector.
Another guess is that HDMI IN can also be use a a upscale device for 4K.
SATA through a USB2.0 bus? slow.
the RK3288 support USB 3.0, so that should do it 🙂
@Eric
Can you show your sample to all? 😉
@natsu
It takes a separate effort (from the normal driver optimization) to get a high antutu score.
That’s to say, it’s possible the driver is ready for videos, browsing and games but the benchmarks are still scoring poorly. This is because all the drivers are cheating in antutu and doing stuff like disabling power management measures or making sure anti aliasing or volumetric lighting doesn’t turn on while antutu is running to get a better FPS. And that’s just the obvious stuff…
@LaChuck
Indeed I think cheating in Antutu is quite normal these days and if you don’t it most people will think your device is a pure performer.
@natsu
Not according to Rockchip 3288 info page.
USB 2.0 only.
Is there any info on what the ‘HDMI in’ is for? Recording video?
The one thing boxes like these lack is a ATSC HD-TV Tuner. Apparently, they exist externally (ex. PT681) but it would seem like a logical selling feature to include.
I bought the T-R42 (RK3188T), for it’s ability to also output composite a/v.
You can not buy or do not buy a device because AnTuTu. User experience is the best test.
the first RK3288 media box appears on Aliexpress today for 113 $

seems nice 🙂

Aliexpress is no longer taking orders on this. Looks like everyone is working on prototypes and nobody has units for sale. Anyone have an update?
@Ken
Not for the Ugoos UT3 directly, but another RK3288 device. One manufacturer told me they had engineering samples. and planned a first trial run of 100 pieces by mid June. Most manufacturers probably have more or less the same schedule, so it’s quite likely retail box won’t ship until July.
I love reading articles on this site about upcoming media boxes but over the years it’s become obvious that the manufacturers only really care about whos first to get out the next iteration of hardware and don’t give a toss about how well they perform. You may get a couple of firmware fixes to elevate them from the Not-Fit-For-Purpose level to something simply buggy as hell, but then they’re dropped.
Correct me if I’m wrong but even having 2/4/8 … 64 core cpu etc doesn’t fix the fact NONE of these boxes can do the absolute basic of A/V properly, such as auto-frame rate detection, incl correct 24hz (all variations), LAN without buffering and flawless HD audio without dropouts, things that boxes based on Sigma Soc (eg Dune) have been able to do for a decade, with one core.
We past the required h/w needed to do full HD bluray with HD audio playback sometime ago, how about making one that actually works as intended !?
I’m hoping the next attempt at Android TV will kill off a lot of these pointless China boxes by finally delivering a more rounded/mature/stable, and capable of the basics, platform?
@Blah
Actually I have some files to test 23.96Hz, but I never used them in reviews, because I did not think that many people cared. Maybe I’m wrong, and I should add these files to my video test.
I haven’t noticed issues playing Blu-ray test files via Ethernet with the latest hardware (Sintel, and some short videos with HD audio), although hardware support for DTS and Dolby may help for the higher bitrates one (60 Mbps).
I stopped working with Sigma Designs before they switch to Android, and I wonder if some of the issues are related to limitations due to Android, for example the lack of multiple scaler support (TBC) which means the UI and video are using the same resolution.

I got couple of boxes after a long wait, The supplier does not understand English well, He said the he is a sales person and does not know anything Technical, when we asked him to connect to Engineer, he said the Engineer does not understand English. The Sales person asked us to google and find a solution ourselves !!
We got this board mainly for it HDMI Input Feature, Now we are not able to use it, But the HDMI input works.
Do any one have the API for HDMI Input window re-sizing and HDMI Input window position changing ? Or Does any one know to whom to contact for this ?
Thanks
Saravana
@cnxsoft
There is not only Blu Ray video in the world, there is some big home video archives with 25/30/50/60p. Non of android box can’t make autoframerate today. If you know it, please post it’s name.
@Denis
MINIX NEO X6 supported it: http://www.cnx-software.com/2014/11/18/minix-neo-x6-media-hub-review/
So all Amlogic MINIX boxes should support it with XBMC MINIX app.
Vidon box should also support it (not tested). I think there may be other, but I can’t remember.
If you also need support for 23.976 fps and 59.94 fps you may need to get a Windows or Linux box instead (TBC).
